It is becoming a more and more common occurrence that I am receiving friend request from my friends’ parents on my social networks - primarily Facebook. We have written before about the increase of moms on social networks, but it seems as if that trend carries over to adults in general
In a recent study by Pew / Internet, it is shown that over one-third (35%) of all adults online have a profile on a social networking site. This number is a 4-fold increase from the same study conducted in 2005.
Of course, when you break the adult demographics out more, there is a direct correlation between age and social media usage:
- 75% of online adults 18-24 have a profile on a social network site
- 57% of online adults 25-34 have a profile on a social network site
- 30% of online adults 35-44 have a profile on a social network site
- 19% of online adults 45-54 have a profile on a social network site
- 10% of online adults 55-64 have a profile on a social network site
- 7% of online adults 65+ have a profile on a social network site

My aunt just joined Facebook. It’s been great catching up with her! I’m a little scared of the day when my mom joins though. I think she’ll use it as a way to keep tabs on me. Is it possible she could be any more nosy?
My mom joined facebook a few months ago. I was shocked when I got the friend invitation. She gets a kick out of viewing my pictures and following my career and activities. I really don’t mind it, but I can see how it would cause problems for others. I have only one thing to say about that-either 1. don’t accept the invitation or 2. Don’t post anything you wouldn’t want them to see.

Well, to be honest. I would just say make sure you get the whole big picture before you do anything. Cause a lot of people fail in that area, they think they’re ready and just end up failing when they could have taken it slowly and easily.
While this topic can be very challenging for most people, my belief is that there has to be a middle or common ground that we all can find. I do value that you’ve added pertinent and intelligent commentary here though. Very much thanks to you!
