USING SOCIAL MEDIA TO FIND YOUR NEXT EMPLOYEE

So you’ve started using social media to reach out to current and potential customers, but, what about your employees, or, more importantly, your future employees? How can you begin using social media tools to effectively tap into that unknown pool of talent?

We’ve assembled a list of the top four social tools that companies can use to attract potential employees.

1. Facebook allows you to connect with and recruit young professionals by maintaining a company page with the latest job information. By viewing the profiles of your fans, you can dig deeper into someone’s personality than a typical resume allows. If this doesn’t work, run a Facebook ad specifically targeting people with an age range and keywords.

2. Your Twitter followers offer a wealth of opportunity. Use your account to notify followers when a position opens in your company. With a few retweets you can reach hundreds of potentially qualified individuals (It works! I found this internship via Twitter.)

3. Scour LinkedIn for recruits in your area and industry at your leisure. User profiles detail past experiences, current jobs, and future goals. Many also include professional recommendations, which can give you insight to a potential employee’s work ethic and habits before meeting with them.

4. Post available positions on college or industry-specific message boards and online marketplaces like Craigslist. These online venues are becoming two-way streets of communication between employers and job-seekers. As an employer you can browse uploaded resumes and respond directly to the posts which interest you. And by searching industry-specific boards you can find those most passionate about their work.

The main point is to make the most of your current networks. You have invested time and effort into building a strong presence for your company online; don’t be afraid to take full advantage of what you built when recruiting applicants.

Here are a few college/professional job boards to get your recruitment process started.

LOCAL TREND MONITORING

Twitter has quickly become a prime source for keeping a pulse of what’s going on around the world…but you already knew that. However, what if you’re a local business owner or a resident of a great city like Baltimore, and you want a way to stay on top of what’s going on specifically in your hood?  Then look no further than Trends Map.

Trends Map is a Google Map mashup that displays real-time Twitter trends by geographic location. Just zoom in to your desired city on the map to see the top tweeted topics in that area.

TRENDMAP1 LOCAL TREND MONITORING

In addition to categorizing and displaying trending tweets in an area, Trends Map also displays the most tweeted links and media, such as images or YouTube videos, in a geographic location. This information can be accessed by selecting a city name from the main map.

TRENDMAP2 LOCAL TREND MONITORING

Lastly, Trends Map allows you to select any given trending topic in order to view other locations around the globe where the same topic is trending.

TRENDMAP3 LOCAL TREND MONITORING

We, here at MGH, encourage all local business owners to take a look at Trends Map whether you tweet or not. This tool provides a quick and simple way to learn more about your customers and potential consumers: what they’re doing, what they’re talking about, who they’re talking to, what issues they find important, what news stories they’re reading and what videos they’re watching.

Learn about your consumers. Care about your neighbors. Stay in touch with what’s relevant in their lives. It will help you figure out how to connect and add value, when you’re ready join in on the conversation.

AUGMENTED REALITY SNEAKS INTO PUBLIC RELEASE

For those of you unfamiliar with augmented reality technology, it is defined by Wikipedia as “a live direct or indirect view of a physical real-world environment whose elements are augmented by virtual computer-generated imagery - creating a mixed reality.” In other words, the technology allows developers to lay pictures, text, video, etc. over top of a live image.

In Yelp’s case, the augmented reality feature allows users to point their iPhones at restaurants, bars or businesses in order to receive information (including contact info and consumer ratings) about the establishment. This data is presented as an overlay on top of the iPhone’s video screen. Watch this thing in action:

Yelp’s app puts consumer reviews and other valuable information directly in the hands of iPhone users. By simply pointing their phone’s camera at a random building, they’re instantly provided with consumer-to-consumer recommendations, making their purchase decisions that much easier.

As more applications like Yelp begin utilizing augmented reality technology, consumers will rely less and less on the web (and your website) to acquire information. They’ll be instantly fed this data without having to lift a finger. Literally thousands of consumer reviews could appear right in front of their eyes…even more of a reason that you should be keeping tabs on what’s being said about you on the web.

In a following post, I will discuss some possible ways that different businesses and industries may be able to utilize augmented reality to engage their customers. In the meantime, if you have any thoughts on the topic, please feel free to leave them in the comment section.

THE NEW FACE OF TWITTER

Yesterday, Twitter unveiled its brand new home screen, and it seems as if they are well on their way to changing the page’s focus from a social networking tool to the prime source for keeping your finger on the pulse of what’s going on around the world.

If you can remember, the old home screen focused on you creating personal connections and sharing “what you are doing” with your social circles. The new home page has totally flipped that view upside down. Instead of asking what are you doing, Twitter tells you to “Share and discover what’s happening right now, anywhere in the world”.

Naturally, the new look feature’s Twitter search tool prominently with that call to “see what people are saying about…”.  The new page also integrates current trending topics as well as most popular topics over the last week and month.

newtwitter THE NEW FACE OF TWITTER

A couple of months ago, Gary Vaynerchuk said that Twitter search is the single most important site on the internet. With the new facelift, Twitter is driving that point home even more. The site has removed the emphasis of creating personal connections, and has instead positioned itself as the place to be to find out what is going on in the world.

Now to convince all of the late adopters that Twitter is more than telling the world you are eating breakfast.

RIDING THE GOOGLE WAVE

Yesterday, Google announced another game-changer in the world of online interaction. Their brand new Wave system will undoubtedly completely alter the way people communicate online for years to come.

Ben Parr, at Mashable has put together a great walkthrough of all of the features of Google Wave. In an attempt to not be redundant upon his article, I urge you to read his complete guide to Google Wave to get a full feel for all of the features Wave offers.

Google Wave gives users the opportunity to participate in real-time discussions with any number of people in their networks. What may begin as an email between two colleagues, can transform into a collaborative, wiki-type document that can be simultaneously contributed to by a whole team of people.

By creating a Wave, you are able to share photos, documents, links and videos by simply dragging and dropping them into the Wave. Due to the open API within Google Wave, you will be able to embed it into your blog or website where visitors are able to interact within the wave directly from your page.

“It is what email would look like if it were created today, not 40 years ago”, to quote Lars Rasmussen, the lead developer of Google Wave.

Google Wave is filled with great productivity tools like a very intuitive spell checker that takes the context of your sentence into consideration before determining if a word is misspelled, a very useful playback feature that shows all of the changes made to a document and by whom over time, and a translator that translates your message in real time as you are typing.

I strongly recommend you take the time to watch the live demonstration of Google Wave, you will see the power and potential that the system offers. Congratulations Google, you are the winner of 35 MGH WOM points for Wave!

GOOGLE UNVEILS NEW SEARCH FEATURES

Yesterday, Google rolled out a whole new tool box of search options that will prove to be nothing short of a game-changer. Users will now be able to search for terms based on relevancy, recency, content type, reviews, etc.  This means that sites like Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, and review sites will have a much larger impact in the search world.

In addition to refining your search, Google has now integrated rich snippets. “Rich snippets could include things like the average review score, the number of reviews, and the price range for a local restaurant”. This puts user-generated content much more into the forefront of any given search.

This new iteration of Google search continues to prove the value of user-generated content. The companies who will make an impact in the early stages of this evolution of search are the ones who are already harnessing the power of their customers by engaging them online and encouraging them to share their thoughts and experiences.

Here at MGH we are obviously strong believers in letting consumers be heard, and are extremely excited that their voice is now an even more integral part of search results. Go do a search for your favorite product with Google’s new search options and see for yourself the power of customers talking.

NEW FACEBOOK HOMEPAGE TAKES TWITTER COMPETITION UP A NOTCH

A few months ago, the talk of the town was Facebook’s interest in acquiring Twitter. It didn’t happen.  So as the cliché saying goes, “if you can’t join ‘em, beat ‘em.” Ok, so maybe that’s not how it goes, but it seems that’s exactly what Facebook is attempting to do with their recently announced changes.

One of the more notable changes is to the homepage, which will now feature a real-time stream of content, as opposed to the old news feed which was only updated about every 10-mintues or so. Users will be able to easily post status updates, notes, images, or videos right from their homepage, via the “What’s on your mind?” box, instead of having to go into each individual application. When you do utilize this box, your information will be posted to your profile and the homepage of all of your friends.

However, unlike Twitter, this live stream can easily be sorted by groups, or application type, so users will be able to view content just from any subset of friends like family or coworkers from the homepage. Additionally, there’s a “highlights” section to the side which displays the most popular content among your friends.

NEWFACEBOOK NEW FACEBOOK HOMEPAGE TAKES TWITTER COMPETITION UP A NOTCH

Also announced today was the transition of pages to profiles, which will enable users to communicate with celebrities, politicians, and organizations as they would any other friend. The 5,000 maximum friend limit was also dropped, making Facebook another attractive option for celebrities and brands who have been turning to Twitter to connect with fans and consumers.

We, here at MGH WOM, give major props to Facebook for constantly re-inventing themselves in order to keep up with the competition and more importantly, to keep up with the ever-evolving way we communicate. Just over four years ago, Facebook was little more then an online directory. Now, it’s quickly becoming the “go-to” spot to connect and share all types of information with friends. Bravo, Facebook, Bravo.

FACEBOOK IS PLAYING THE WIDGET GAME

Just a couple of months ago, Facebook launched Facebook Connect, which is an OpenID-type system that allows users to log into third party sites with their Facebook username and password. Facebook Connect has seemingly been accepted with open arms by many users and can now can be found on more than 6,000 third party sites.

Just last week, however, Facebook began invading even more of your favorite websites. Their newest widget allows users to login to a Comment Box widget and post comments directly on your webpage. The best part of this widget is that users’ comments are then updated on their personal Facebook page. For example, if this blog featured the Facebook Comments Box, you would see a “Rusty Walters post a comment to Facebook is Playing the Widget Game” show up in your news feed.

We love the implications of this as it allows your blog or web page to be exposed to your readers’ whole network of friends on Facebook.. Below, you can watch a short video from the Facebook developers on how the widget functions.

Happy Commenting!

I WANT MY MTV

Mtvmoon I WANT MY MTV

My Super Sweet 16.  Real World/Road Rules Challenge #43.  Date My [fill in the blank].

If you’ve happened to flip on MTV within the past year, you probably didn’t get a chance to hear any sort of actual music.

The station’s once-acclaimed format (music-oriented programming) has shifted into an odd mish-mash of…well…I don’t even know how to describe the things that I’ve seen broadcast lately.

But, the MTV that I once knew and loved has returned, in the form of MTVMusic.com.
